The ASUS Zenfone Max (M1) does not stand out in the sea of affordable smartphones in the market. Not that it’s a bad thing since most of the brands in this segment – except Honor perhaps – prefer to go for the predictable but functional design. As we have seen with the success of Xiaomi’s Redmi series, it seems that most customers do not care too much either.
The ZenFone Max Pro has a reliable aluminum alloy body and a higher screen that combined with slim bevels allow a 5.99-inch screen in what is generally a 5.5-inch chassis. The high proportion of screen to body of 83% is a pretty good number and with rounded edges and corners, the phone is quite comfortable to hold and use despite the large screen size.
The Zenfone Max Pro has a Full HD + IPS screen of 5.99 inches with an aspect ratio of 18: 9. It is a very vibrant screen for its price, and with a contrast ratio of up to 1500: 1, the colors are pretty accurate The brightness is quite high, which allows good readability of sunlight.
While there is no Gorilla Glass protection, the screen is resistant to scratches and comes with oleophobic protection.
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, the Zenfone Max Pro comes in two memory variants: 3 GB of RAM with 32 GB of internal storage and 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of internal storage.
It is said that the Snapdragon 636, a successor to the reliable and popular Snapdragon 625 chipset, offers more than 50% faster performance and even greater efficiency than its predecessor. It contains eight Qualcomm Kryo cores compared to the standard ARM Cortex A53 cores in the previous Snapdragon 625. Without any benchmark test between the two, the Zenfone Max Pro seems to perform well. It gets along well with everything thrown at it, even the intensive graphics games. In the little time I spent with the device, I did not notice any delay or stuttering. The Android experience is very simple, really.
One of the highlights of the Zenfone Max Pro is that it manages to include a high-capacity 5000 mAh battery in a slim and compact chassis. The low-power Snapdragon 636 processor and large battery is a solid combo that will give the phone a long-lasting battery. And then there’s the included 2A / 10W charger that charges the phone fast enough, in less than three hours. We are waiting for the final firmware to confirm how long the battery will last, with early tests showing about 40 percent remaining after a full day of intensive use.
The ZenFone Max Pro has a triple-slot tray, so users can use two 4G SIM cards and one microSD card, all at the same time, if they wish.
ASUS also highlights the incomparable audio experience (in its segment) in the Zenfone Max Pro with a 5-magnet speaker and an onboard NXP smart amplifier. To increase the audio even more, the Zenfone Max Pro comes in the box with an ingenious Max Box accessory that passively amplifies audio without any electronics. It is a simple configuration of cardboard vanilla and magnet based on precision acoustics.
The Zenfone Max Pro eliminates the ZenUI skin patented by the company in favor of the pure experience of Android 8.1 Oreo. The latest version of Android without bloatware, of which the company has been notorious in the past, should attract many fans who prefer Android stock instead of heavy customizations that sometimes are not well thought out and often wear down performance.
The ZenFone Max Pro packages in a dual camera on the back. There is a 13MP rear camera with a 5MP depth sensor, so yes, you can use the depth of field effect for those shots and bokeh portraits.
On the front, there is an 8MP camera with bokeh mode and soft light LED flash for decent selfies even in low light conditions. In the absence of the secondary sensor, the camera automatically creates a shallow depth of field for photos with prominent themes in the foreground.
There are many things at stake with the application of the camera in the Zenfone Max Pro. There are several shooting modes, filters, beautification settings and more. It is not the best experience, but yes, many options to play are welcome. That said, ASUS has reported that the application of the camera in the final firmware that applies to retail devices will be further improved. We’ll see how it goes.
